The recent mass shootings have again highlighted a deep cultural divide in our country. As horrific as they are, mass shootings represent a fraction of the total gun deaths in the U.S. We have become numb to the daily reports of violence from all over our great nation. There are no easy answers, but there are several concrete steps we can take that fairly balance the rights protected by the 2nd amendment with the rights preserved elsewhere in the Constitution. These include tightening loopholes in gun sales and registration, focusing real dollars on mental health issues, and improving the sharing of information between jurisdictions so that the federal database retailers rely on is accurate and complete.
